Everyone's had Jehovah's Witness' knock at their door, right? Usually they give you this little pamphlet about how it's not to late to repent and tell you that you can join them the coming Sunday. Or so it has been in my experience. Today they came as usual, although I had the door open, so there was no chance of me avoiding them. So I answered the door, they gave me the talk and this time, a thin booklet. This booklet was different than the others, however. This one was about Atheism and how it would lead to the end of the world. Imagine that. I disagree.
The world isn't going to end because people don't believe in God. The world's existence has never depended upon creatures believing in God, or having a religion. Nothing has changed since the beginning of time, in that respect. If the world ends, it won't be because God threw a hissy fit as a result of humanity's loss of faith. People look up to the sky and down to the pits of hell, never considering that perhaps the apocalypse would be nearing due to their own actions. It's not a lack of faith, my friends. It's a lack of accountability.
The simple fact of the matter is that the longer people maintain the childish notion that God and Satan are responsible for all that is good and evil, the longer the problem will go without remedy. People need to learn to take responsibility for their actions. Its humanity's unwillingness to truly accept accountability for what it has done that will be its undoing. People kill, rape, torture, and destroy. It's not going to be a righteous bolt of lightning from the heavens that will bring about the end. It'll be a bomb set off by people. It'll be disease set forth in biological warfare. It'll be the spread of humanity from one end of the earth to the other.
